Introduction

My name is Alex Carlson. I am a freshman at the University of Rhode Island. I am an English and Secondary Education major. I also hope to minor in Writing and Rhetoric and History. I am part of the Honors College here at URI, and feel extremely blessed to be a part of this program. I always thought it would be cool to have a job as a teacher, but I never thought that I would ever become one. I decided to pursue a career in education when I realized that I really enjoy helping people learn a new concept. I think what really got me interested in education was when I was a volunteer at one of my district's middle schools. I would go and help 6th-8th graders with their homework or help them study or take notes more efficiently. I really enjoyed my time there because it wasn't time that I was wasting- I was helping a student to better themselves in someway. Those few hours after school a week were responsible for opening my eyes up to a career in education. I am very much looking forward to helping my future students.

Academic Autobiographies

My Best Work

My greatest work was probably a research paper that I wrote for my junior year Honors English Class. It was the hardest I have ever worked on a paper in my life. We had to write about something that we hadn't yet covered in class. My teacher basically just gave me a few books on Wallace Stevens and told me to get to work. Little did I know that Wallace Stevens is considered one of the most complicated poets of the twentieth century. It was really the most difficult work I have ever had to deal with. There was little support for the argument that I had, so my paper mostly consisted of what I thought and gathered from careful analysis. There were very few citations and my paper and it was mostly what I saw from the writing and themes. It was a huge academic risk, my placement into AP English Literature & Composition depended on it. But, after spending hours combing over poems, the hard work paid off. I received the highest grade in the class with a solid 93 on the paper. And, I earned my seat in AP Lit. & Comp.
